Mary and Elizabeth

1:39 In those days ¹  Mary got up and went hurriedly into the hill country, to a town of Judah, ² 

Yosua 10:6

10:6 The men of Gibeon sent this message to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, “Do not abandon ³  your subjects! ⁴  Rescue us! Help us! For all the Amorite kings living in the hill country are attacking us.” ⁵ 

Yosua 10:40

10:40 Joshua defeated the whole land, including the hill country, the Negev, the lowlands, ⁶  the slopes, and all their kings. He left no survivors. He annihilated everything that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel had commanded.

[1:39]  ¹ sn The expression In those days is another general time reference, though the sense of the context is that the visit came shortly after Mary miraculously conceived and shortly after the announcement about Jesus.

[1:39]  ² sn The author does not say exactly where Elizabeth stayed. The location is given generally as a town of Judah. Judah is about a three day trip south of Nazareth.

[10:6]  ³ tn Heb “do not let your hand drop from us.”

[10:6]  ⁴ tn Heb “your servants!”

[10:6]  ⁵ tn Heb “have gathered against us.”

[10:40]  ⁶ tn Or “foothills”; Heb “the Shephelah.”
